to both president obama and mitt romney's events here in ohio. the president is in bowling green. mitt romney is in bedford heights. we'll go live to both locations. to new york, it is the one time of the year when nearly every world leader in the same place, a lot of them at least, the united nations general assembly. kings, prime ministers, ministers get a few minutes at the podium to address the rest of the world. they get their undivided attention unless, of course, certain delegations decide to walk out in protest or not even show up. well, that's what happened today at the american mission to the u.n. essentially did not show up as the president of iran walked in. more than just a minute or so. here's a bit of a speech a few minutes ago by president mahmoud ahmadinejad. it was not a redefined message by any stretch of the imagination. he pretty much repeated what he has said along the lines of western world nomination as he rallied against the western world as well as the united states. let's listen in as he talks about the u.n. as well. >> the need to remove the structural value

of muscling on both sides. i think it affected his relationship with barack obama for the first few years of his presidency, but i think now that they've sorted things out between themselves and i think he said, look, he loves being center stage. the clinton global initiative is huge. it's attended by almost as many world leaders as the u.n. general assembly. you have a guy who really isn't president but for all intents and purposes is a very influential world leader. somebody said to me, who needs who more? does barack obama need bill clinton more or does bill clinton need barack obama more? i think they need each other. bill clinton, the inflew enser. i think for barack obama there's no more effective, articulate defender of his right to be re-elected right now than bill clinton. >> okay. >> so along the same lines is a new poll, quinnipiac, "new york times" poll that shows mr. obama is up by 10 points in the state of ohio over mitt romney. is that for the efforts of obama's great campaigning or does it have more to do with bill clinton and that widely admired speech he gave at the dnc?

.j. lang got fed by the refs. even president obama tweeted. nfl fans on both sides of the aisle hope the revs lockout is settled soon. this is after a disputed field goal gave the baltimore ravens a one point win over the new england patriots and a series of botched calls and misapplied rules that have driven coaches, players, and fans crazy. all this because of a labor dispute between the nfl and its regular referees that began when the league locked out the refs in june. >> reporter: the referees want more money asking more than the nfl's offer to increase the salaries from $149,000 a year to $189,000. compare that to the median nfl players salary, $770,000 a year. it's important to remember the average nfl playing career is only 3.5 years and most of the refs have other careers so these aren'tful-time jobs for them. >> reporter: the nfl wants to make the refs full time and to add more refs so the average referee would make less money. they want to move them to from a pension system to a 401k. but in the context of a business that brings in $9.5 billion a year, seems solvable. red

. it was the state that gave president obama -- senator obama his first victory. and he won iowa four years ago in the general election, considered a battleground state. both campaigns really going after it. four years ago goi, 545,000 iowans cast ballots early. and that was almost double what they did eight years prior. so early voting is important in iowa as it is in a bunch of these other states and that's why you're seeing the campaigns really press there not just in october, but now and in august because they knew that a lot of these voters will be casting ballots before the debates. >> when i was a kid, early voting was because you couldn't vote on election day and i know a lot of things have changed. we have cell phones now. but we have really important days coming up on the calendar and i'm speaking of the debates. we learn so much about these candidates. and if you vote early, they don't matter at all. >> exactly. the presidential debate, the first one will be in denver, colorado next wednesday. but by next wednesday, ten states will be voting early. and as you mentioned, iowa and ohio

recently both nationally and in swing states, you know this poll looks like a lot of others. obama has advantages over romney on the economy and a range of issues. one thing that stood out in the poll is that a lot of voters didn't like how obama's handling the situation in libya. and the romney campaign sort of sees that as well which is why you see them hitting obama so hard on this lately. but there is still a problem here for romney. this is why the debates are so important. romney wants to change the fundamental structure of this race with this debate coming up next wednesday. remember, over 50 million people watched the first presidential debate in 2008. this is going to be a big moment coming up next week, fred, for mitt romney. >> well, let's shift to the u.s. senate and how pivotal any race could be. the democrats have a six-seat majority, but they're defending 23 seats in the election, with republicans defending just 10. so what would give the republicans a pretty good shot at seizing a 51-seat majority, but they also have a big problem and that is that race in missouri. >> y

during the primary season. you got a few times for both mitt romney and president obama to show their stuff, this first debate is huge. largely because the race is tight, in the battleground states, the president seems to be really gaining an advantage. and generally, you know, you can't decide as a voter to fire somebody until you're sure that the replacement can do a good job. this is that moment when you're going to have a huge audience and if you're mitt romney, you have to explain to american voters why you can be commander in chief, and why you would be the replacement for president obama. >> isn't so much of this, though, leading up to wednesday night, the lowering of the expectations game, but to quote candy crowley, whenno s she was talking about chris christie, apparently chris christie didn't get the memo, but we showed this poll that shows that americans very much so expect the president to win this debate with mitt romney. might that be a good thing for mitt romney goinging into this with the lower numbers? >> sure. lower -- i never talked to as many romney advisers
